Fire destroys Lascelles Hall Cricket Club

Much of Lascelles Hall CC club house was destroyed by a fire just after midnight on Sunday 31st October only hours after fire crews had been called to to a fire at Kirkheaton CC. Memorabilia , including precious photographs, archives and cups have been destroyed. There is a possibility that the blaze was started deliberately.

Kirkheaton Panto a sell out - again

For the third time the Pantomime produced by Kirkheaton Parish Church was sold out. This year’s panto, Dick Whittington, was performed on the 4th, 5th and 6th of February.

“It’s a fantastic response,” says the Rector of Kirkheaton, the Revd Richard Steel. “to what has become a very popular village institution.”

This is the third pantomime the Kirkheaton Players have done (previous ones were in 2006 and 2008). Each time it has been packed out. Mr Steel reckons its success is down to being very local and very family friendly.

“It is a completely traditional family panto,” says Director, Nigel Codman. “with adventure, romance, songs and lots of humour that everyone can appreciate - and jokes which won’t leave anyone squirming in their seats in embarrassment. It’s good, old-fashioned, fun.”

Nigel is the Dame (5th from left on back row of photo). Among other stars of the show is local GP Neal Jolly, as chief ‘baddy’ the Rat King (5th from right on back row of photo), along with his followers the “Rat-lings”. But stealing the show is Megan Wright as Dick Whittington’s cat, Thomas (centre stage).

Unity Service

On 24th January, the United Church joined the Parish Church for a 'Unity' service which had a party theme. The younger children played team games and taught the adults an action song, while the teenagers decorated a cake with the inscription '1 + 1 = ?' God's mathematics might make so much more of us! The time together included drama and discussion about how we are as two churches working as one and how we can continue to celebrate and serve the community together.

Support for Haiti by King James' pupils
Pupils of King James School at Almondbury organised  a 'non-uniform day' on Friday 22nd January and raised almost £1600 for victims of the Haitian earthquake. Paul Raleigh, a deputy head at the school said 'Last week two young girls came to see me regarding their concern for the people of Haiti.  They wanted to do something to raise some money. It shows what can be done very quickly where there is a will.'

Super Heroes Holiday Club

"The theme for this year's Holiday Club at Kirkheaton Parish Church was 'Superheroes' and, as you can see from the photos, plenty of people got into character.
Each day from Tuesday - Friday saw around 75 children enjoying activities, crafts, games, music and drama, including stories of Bible 'superheroes' and an overall theme that each and every one of us is a very special superhero. The atmosphere was really special, with the adults enjoying it almost as much as the children.
The week ended with a disco on the Saturday night and a special service, barbecue and family games on the Sunday.
If you want to get the dates in your Diary - next year's Holiday Club will be -  Tuesday 26th-31st July 2011"

Successful launch of Kirkheaton Community Plan

On Tuesday (6th July) around 70 people attended the launch of a Community Plan for Kirkheaton. The idea was given an overwhelmingly positive response and a good proportion of those there immediately volunteered to take part in the work to produce it. The work to produce the report will take place over the next year, with a questionnaire and a series of events to allow those who live, work or are members of organisations in and around the village to become involved. There will also be wide consultations with Kirklees and Kirkburton Parish Council, local businesses and other service providers.

“We were delighted that so many people turned up,” says the Revd Richard Steel, Chair of Kirkheaton Community Network. “It was a really encouraging start and gives a great boost to those who have been working for the community over many years.”

“One really exciting thing was that as well as Parish Councillors and others who already are involved in community action there were many others too who wish to get involved,” he continues, “including a number of teenagers. As well as the main report there will be a special report looking at the needs and concerns of children and young people.”

“The aim of a Community Plan is to gather information about the hopes and concerns of local people,” says Mr Richard Steel. “It looks both at what already is happening and what people would like to see.”

“Everyone who lives or works in the Kirkheaton area (including Lascelles Hall, Briggate, Gawthorpe and Houses Hill) will be encouraged to take part,” he adds. “It’s very important that all the groups currently working in the community should be listening to what people in the community really want, what they need. This workwill be very relevant for all sorts of future planning.”

“We hope that, over the next year, many more people will become involved with the research and the writing of the report. We want this to be a significant document that supports the development of the community for years to come. This project has got off to a flying start.”

Scouts and Guides Gala - July 4th

Jean Beverley write: We had a very good day with plenty of support from a large number of other people in Kirkheaton, a fine but very windy day (we lost two gazebos which twisted with the force of the wind).  However we made a profit of over £2,900 which was exceptional.  Thanks to all who contributed on the day.

Over the Summer holidays we had our Kitchen refurbished with £1,000 grant towards this from Kirkburton District Council.  A further £900 was received via a Grassroots Grant.  We spent £2,600 in total on the kitchen units and also purchased a new Electric Cooker at a further cost of £900.  From this you will see that we have already spent a large portion of moneys raised, but we now have a superb kitchen which has already been used by two of the units for groups to do some baking.

The demise of Yetton Rant
Yetton Rant is no more. After over 100 years, the fair, which is held over the Spring bank Holiday weekend, has been cancelled. Alexander Moran the organiser of the event, says that the recession was in part to blame. In the past the fair has been hugely popular on the then Whitsun weekend, but attendance has dropped dramatically over the last few years and running the event is no longer viable.

Update on last September's bulb planting by Kirkheaton school children

The fruits of the efforts of children from Kirkheaton primary school and King James's are now to be seen on the field next to the Community Centre/Library. Unfortunately as can be seen in the right hand photo below some have been vandalised.

Police reports

ROBBERY
Over the last couple of months there have been a number of robberies in the Village where people have been stopped and money and personal property taken from them.  I am pleased to announce that 3 people have now been arrested and are helping the police with enquires.

NUISANCE MOTOR BIKES
Kirkheaton is having quite a few problems with nuisance youths riding around the village wearing no helmets on scrambler bikes or mini moto’s.
What I am asking is that you still keep ringing in with these calls on 08456060606 but ultimately I need your assistance by you passing the names of the riders or passengers or where the bikes are kept to myself at Moldgreen Police Station on 01484 436724 and take a stance against them by giving the police statements so we can go to theses people and serve them warning notices and seize the bikes.
The police do see these motorbikes whilst out on patrols but sometimes the fleeting glances we get are not enough to identify the rider/s and therefore the notices can not be served.
Any assistance you can give and hopefully you are willing to give a statement, we can work together and stop this dangerous and annoying act.

Good News!
Due to some excellent intelligence from local residents in Kirkheaton numerous youths have been spoken with regarding nuisance motor bikes and Anti Social Behaviour.  Myself and PC Richard Nicholls have visited numerous addresses and spoken to and advised the youths of what will happen if sighted again. This would not have been possible without your help. Keep the calls coming to myself at Moldgreen on 01484 436724 or why not e-mail me at SC13@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

In the early hours of Thursday 29th April local resident Mr Charles Cartwright disturbed someone breaking into his van. On going outside he detained a young lad and held him there until the police arrived.  This was a very brave thing to do and Mr Cartwright’s quick action’s resulted with the young lad being arrested for theft from motor vehicle.
The above is a reminder to make sure you lock and secure your vehicle at all times day and night.  Quite often I have walked passed vehicles where property has been left on the seat, mobile phones thrown on the dash board and Satellite Navigation systems left on display. It only takes a matter of seconds for someone to break into your car.
REMEMBER

  • If you have a garage use it to lock your vehicle away.
  • Remove all valuable items when leaving your vehicle.
  • Remove vehicle related documents, such as anything showing ‘pin codes’ for audio equipment or vehicle identity numbers.
  • Always lock your doors and close windows, even if just leaving your vehicle for a couple of minutes.
  • Where possible use an accredited safer car park when parking in town centres.
  • If you must park your vehicle in your driveway, or on the street, buy a car security device such as a steering lock and remember to use it.
  • CD players and Satellite Navigation systems are the most common item stolen from your vehicles. Always remove items and take them with you.

June 10 update

DRUGS RAID – Officers attended at a local address in Kirkheaton where a male was arrested for a drug related offence.  A substantial amount of M- CAT (Methodrone) was located at the property.  If you have any information regarding any type of drug related crime or offences, please contact me at Moldgreen on 01484 436724 or confidentially at crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.

INFORMATION NEEDED – On Monday 24th May 2010 at around 10:15pm on St Johns Avenue Kirkheaton, there was a report made to the police of a hedge on fire. The hedge set fire to a nearby fence which subsequently ignited a dog kennel near to the fence; tragically the family pet dog was trapped within the kennel and subsequently died. Were you in the village that evening or did you see anyone hanging around near to the playing field next to the community centre?  If you have any information at all please contact me at Moldgreen Police Station or e-mail be at sc13@westyorkshie.pnn.police.uk or call crime stoppers confidentially on 0800 555 111.

FUN ATHLETIC DAY – STAR TRACK – Holmfirth Harriers Athletic Club in conjunction with Kirklees Neighbourhood Policing Team, are holding a two day summer Athletic Scheme at Netherhall Learning Campus (old Rawthorpe High School) on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd August.  Each course is from10am till 3pm and open to ages 8 – 13yrs of age.  It is fully supervised but you will need to bring a packed lunch with you and a drink.  The course costs £12 for two days and all participants receive an Avia Star Track Goody bag plus certificate of achievement.  This is an excellent event I will be there helping to assist along with my Sgt John Mcfadzean who is a fully qualified coach for Holmfirth Harriers.  If you are interested in joining you kids up for the event either contact me at Moldgreen Police Station or drop me an e-mail and I will send you a registration form.

KIRKHEATON SCHOOL SPICED TRAINING – Over the next few weeks I will be attending at Kirkheaton Primary School to teach SPICED. (Schools Partnership In Children’s Education on Drugs). This is a training course for year 6 pupils to learn more about drugs awareness and the dangers of drug taking. This is also a good opportunity for the pupils to ask questions regarding drug related issues and discuss what happens if drugs are misused. I also cover a subject on how to get out of situations you don’t what to be in.

[Jan 10]

The following abbreviated advert has appeared inviting Kirkheaton residents to comment on Casey's permit application. You have 20 days[8th February - with a little latitude] from the 19th January to submit them.

The Environment Agency has received an application for an Environmental Permit under the Regulations from P Casey Enviro Ltd.

This information is held in registers at the following locations: Kirklees Council, Riverbank Court, Wakefield Road, Aspley, Huddersfield,HD5 9AA and EA Phoenix House, Global Avenue, Leeds,LS11 8PG

Village Questionnaire re Parkside Development
Questionnaires were distributed throughout the village to gauge the level of feeling about the proposed development of a surgery/information centre/dentist/library centre on Parkrise. Many were returned to the the consultation meeting held at the United Church on December 8th.

Results of the consultation meeting and questionnaire [provided by GPI]

Very briefly there were 324 returned responses in favour of a joint medical centre and library and 26 opposed. With particular regard to the Park Side site there were 272 in favour of this location and 56 against.
The results clearly show that there is a high level of support for a new combined facility with a majority in favour of the proposed site.  We are obviously aware of the impact that the development would have on the local residents surrounding the site but we are still of the opinion that this is the only viable site option that allows this type of combined facility to proceed.
As the United Church have the benefit of a restrictive covenant on the Park Side site they are to discuss the release of the covenant with their members before making a decision as to their intentions.  This will occur in January or February.

Funding for new Parkside Development withdrawn by Primary Care Trust [Jan 10]

We have just received notice that the proposed new Surgery/Library development will not be going ahead, because of decisions by the Primary Care Trust and Kirklees MBC. Here is some text from the letter we received from the developers, GPI, which we have been asked to make public. We hope to hear some more detailed information on the reasons before long, and will publish anything more as soon as we receive it.

“NHS Kirklees, in light of the financial circumstances of the Primary Care Trust and the difficulties facing the public sector finances, is unable to progress all their prioritised schemes. As such it has been decided that no additional financial commitment can be considered for Kirkheaton until 2014/15. In the absence of the medical centre involvement, Kirklees MBC has decided (as of 13 Jan 2010) not to continue with the disposal of the Park Side site and thediscussions regarding the release of the restrictive covenant."

“Whilst the requirement for a replacement medical centre in Kirkheaton will not disappear and with it the need to identify and acquire a suitable site, the timescales indicated by NHS Kirklees do not allow us to progress this site speculatively, nor would we wish to raise expectations unnecessarily with the majority of Kirkheaton residents who supported the community development or cause further concern and anguish to those residents who opposed the development."

“I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the stakeholders of the proposal to thank Kirkheaton Community Network for its efforts over the years to bring the question of a new community development to the wider Kirkheaton community."

“We will continue to work with the medical practice to lobby for new and improved premises for the benefit of the Kirkheaton residents.” Top

The proposed new surgery [For information only as now cancelled]
The doctors' practice in Kirkheaton has out grown its present site and is looking to build another surgery in the village. Two sites are being investigated - the open spaces on Park Rise and Field Rise.

The proposed building on Park Rise would be mainly a single storey with parking for approximately 30 vehicles. It will contain a number of treatment rooms to enable staff to carry out a wider number of medical procedures than available at the moment. Also proposed is a dental practice, pharmacy and a community library within the same building. It is intended that there would be a one way traffic flow around the site.

New sugery plans

The site on Fields Rise would contain the same facilities as those proposed at Park Rise plus a new community room as the present community centre would have to be demolished.

The Christmas Cottage event held by June Durkin at her home - Almond Cottage on Saturday 4th December, raised £224 for the Bridgewood Trust which is a charity supporting adults with learning difficulties. June made many of the crafts on sale [see photos] including Christmas food goodies, plants and handmade gifts. She was delighted with the support and intends to repeat the event next year.

Kirklees Land Plan
At the request of the government Kirklees has to find space for 37000 new homes between 2004 and 2026. In its document - 'Land Use where you live' - it sets out 4 options identifying areas where development could take place. Click here to see the document . Each options involves extensive house building in Kirkheaton - some of which would probably have to be on present green belt sites.
Option 1 - 1300 houses would be built
Option 2 - 1000 houses
Option 3 - 200 houses
Option 4 - 1300 houses
Options 1,2,3 and 4 will use 'greenfield sites within and around the edges of.. villages' but Options 1,2 and 4 would also have to 'extend into the green belt''
