January 2012
'A big thank you to the United and Parish churches for donating the collection at their interdenominational service on Sunday 22nd January [a sum of £209] to Yetton Together to further our work in the community'.
It's arrived - the community plan is launched!
On Thursday 26th January hundreds of Yettoners attended the primary school to witness the launch of the community plan. Guests included the Deputy Mayor Mrs Christine Iredale[ a former Yettoner], Barry Sheerman MP and Sharon Dunford, Chair of Kirkburton Parish Council.
Most of the village societies, sports groups and churches attended with stalls to publise their activities. The school choir and the Brownies added to the occasion with their singing.
The grand finale was a spectacular firework display to ensure everyone will remember this special occasion.
People there had the opportunity to collect their personal copy of the plan. The rest of the plans will be delivered over the next 10 days. If for some reason you don't receive a plan before 11 February please phone 01484 537617 and we will get one to you.

Kirkburton Parish Council Aims to Reduce Dog Fouling with
“Bag It and Bin It” Campaign
In response to many concerns expressed by residents, members of Kirkburton Parish Council have recently created a new “Bag It and Bin It” Working Party with the aim of reducing the increasing amount of dog fouling in the Parish. As well as being extremely unpleasant and unsightly, dog fouling can have serious health issues, especially to children.
The Working Party plans to provide dispensers in all the villages, specifically located where there is a problem. We are working with the Dog Warden to identify the worst areas and Councillors are currently consulting residents on this. If you have a view where a dispenser would be useful, please do let us know. Dog waste bags and dispensers will be situated in the worst areas and leaflets and posters will exhort people to behave responsibly.
The Working Party also aims to teach the younger generation that if you have a dog, you have a responsibility to look after it properly and clear up the mess. To try to do this we will be running a competition for local schools for pupils to design a poster to get the “Bag It and Bin It” message across.
At the last Parish Council meeting, members gave full support to Kirklees’ plans to introduce Dog Control Orders and issue penalty notices against offenders who allow their dogs to foul, to designate certain areas dog-free zones and to compel owners to keep their dogs on a lead in specified areas.
The Council wishes to make it clear that the “Bag It and Bin It” campaign is not a vendetta against dogs, their owners or animal lovers but simply wants dog owners to behave responsibly.
The message is very clear: Bag It and Bin It!
YT meet with local business people
On the 15th November YT invited local shopkeepers and small business people to a meeting to discuss the Community Plan. About 15 people attended. Richard Steel started of the meeting by talking about how YT evolved and what it saw as its role in the community. Various members of the steering group then describe their particular roles in the various action plans being developed. The floor was then opened for discussion. There was lively debate on how more people could be encourage to shop in the village. Parking was seen as a major problem and a variety of imaginative ideas were put forward to address this problem. The business people there stressed that they wanted to help in any way possible and the general concensus was that the meeting had been a very worth while event as it also put them in touch with each other.
Yetton Together Newsletter Distribution Autumn 2011
Hopefully we have now distributed all the YT newsletters to the community.
We have now had 2 editions of the newsletter which have been well received. We are hoping to produce an issue either 3 or 4 times a year. This will depend on funding and whether we can raise some money through advertising. No decisions have been made about its future format. Any articles, forthcoming events or possible adverts, for inclusion should be sent to:
ytnews@hotmail.co.uk
If you haven't received your copy of the Autumn newsletter please phone 01484 537617

Over 600 questionnaires were completed and we are now in the process of anaylysing the data from them. Many people expressed an interest in finding out how they can help in improving our community so we have arranged a meeting to be held on Monday 26th September at the Parish Centre at 8pm. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served and it will be a chance to find out what is going to happen over the next few months without any obligation.
We were very pleased with the reception of our first newsletter. Our second one will be distributed throughout the area in early October and we are planning further editions..

Kirkheaton and area
Community-Led Plan Questionnaire |
A Community-Led Plan is a way of involving as many people as possible in looking at the community we live in, the issues facing us, and the hopes we might have for it. Many communities around the country have produced such a plan and have already seen definite benefits.
Yetton Together is an independent local community organisation, a group of volunteers set up last year to steer the Plan process. It is not associated with any political group or any religious organisation.
This questionnaire is for Kirkheaton and the surrounding area (Upper Heaton, Lascelles Hall, House Hill, Gawthorpe and Briggate).
This is your Plan and will achieve several things:
- provide energy for individuals to get together and take the initiative to do new things.
- give information to local community groups to help them develop their activities.
- give service providers (such as Kirklees, transport services, etc) accurate and detailed public opinion about what people’s priorities are.
- and more. A Community-Led Plan is about getting involved, and having fun!
We need to be realistic. This is not a ‘wish list’ to take to someone else. It is primarily something we work on together as a community. Whilst we realise there are obvious financial constraints in the current climate, this should not mean we put our ambitions on hold.
A number of public consultation events were held in Kirkheaton in March this year to enable local people to talk about what they liked or disliked about the area and how it could be improved. This questionnaire is based on the feedback from these events. It will guide the whole development of the plan, which is to be launched in the Autumn.
The information on this form is and will remain, completely anonymous. The data will be analysed on our behalf by Rural Action Yorkshire and the data will only be used in relation to developing our Community-Led Plan. All completed questionnaires will be shredded once the data analysis is complete. There is a page where you can give your contact details, if you wish, but this is completely separate.
We hope to collect this questionnaire in a few days time. If we miss you, please drop it in to one of our boxes in the local shops, to our stall at the Kirkheaton Gala on 3rd July, or telephone 537617 to arrange for us to pick it up. Please also use this phone number if you need help completing the form or need any further information. |
We need your opinions. Have your say about future projects and improvements in and around Kirkheaton by filling this in.
Thank you
Yetton Together Steering Group
Update February 1st 2011
Things are starting to happen. In January Awards for All [The National Lottery] awarded us a considerable grant which will fund much of our intended activities. Soon our first newsletter will be delivered to all households in the area informing residents of our aims and how they can make their views count in the formation of a village plan. During March there will be a number of consultation events to be held in and around the village when people can express their views on how we can improve village life for us all. These views will then inform us on what questions to put on our questionnaire which will be delivered to all households in the summer.
Young people will also have their voice heard through the activities planned for King James's school and Kirkheaton Primary.
Update November 2010
We had a very successful fund/awareness raising evening on Saturday 28th November. About 90 people took part in a quiz at the Conservative Club and also enjoyed a 'so supper'. The quiz also had a local flavour - 10 of the questions were about Kirkheaton and proved difficult for some of us!!!!The Rector's team proved unbeatable and carried off the prize of £25. Over £200 was raised for our coffers.
We are still waiting to see if we will be awarded grants from Awards for All and Kirkburton PC to allow us to continue with the plan. Hopefully when we have secured the funding we will be in a position to distribute our first news letter in January 2011. Other grant applications are in the pipeline.
Update October 2010
Things are moving on - we have applied for grants from West Yorkshire Police Community Trust, Awards for All 'National Lottery] and Kirkburton Parish Council.
We are now in the process of collating information for a Community newsletter which will list events planned to inform residents on how they can have their say in the village plan. The newsletter will be delivered through your letter box in mid December - please support us by reading it and hopefully attending some of the events planned. The more people involved in the planning of the future of our village the better the outcome.
Look out for our new name and logo Yetton Together - action in our community! This was agreed at our meeting on August 17th. A chair, treasurer and secretary were appointed and we now have our own bank account! We just need money to kick start the action! Grants have been applied for from various organisations. One of the first actions of the group wil lbe to compile and distribute a Community newsletter which will outline the timetable of events etc in the village and keep everyone informed of our progress upto date. The following letter explains the aim of a community plan
From the Kirkheaton Community Network
An open letter concerning the development of a Community Plan for Kirkheaton [July 2010]
The Kirkheaton Community Network has set in train the preparation of a Community Plan for the village of Kirkheaton.
A Community Plan is a way of involving as many people as possible in looking at the community we live in, the issues facing us, and the hopes we might have for it. Many communities around the country have produced such a plan. Locally, Farnley Tyas produced one a couple of years ago, Shelley just last month, and both communities have already seen definite benefits.
A Community Plan looks at issues such as Development and the Environment, Traffic and Transport, Crime and Community Safety, Housing, Sport and Leisure and what local facilities there are. It looks both at what already is happening and what people would like to see. Everyone who lives or works in Kirkheaton will be encouraged to take part in the research and development of the Plan, as will members of all the local clubs and organisations, Kirkheaton School, Ward and Parish Councillors, Public Transport bodies, Police & Fire Authorities - all those one might describe as ‘stakeholders’ in the community. Rural Action Yorkshire will be providing professional help and advice throughout the process, and we will be applying to various bodies to enable us to fund it.
It is a good time to be thinking about this. It’s very important that the two groups planning major developments (that is the Sports Clubs and Kirkheaton Parish church) get the maximum information from the community to guide their plans. Then there is the ongoing Kirklees Local Development Plan for housing, business and infrastructure, and more. Listening to what people in the community really want, what they need, will be very relevant for all sorts of future planning.
Communities have found all sorts of other benefits as a ‘spin off’ from such plans. Obviously the specifics vary from community to community but in both Shelley and Farnley Tyas the work to produce the Plan has itself had the benefit not only of gaining valuable information, but also of discovering people who are keen to get involved in community activities. Some new things have already happened - small scale but significant (such as a dog mess prevention schemes) and much useful background for such things as what sort of housing developments might be preferred have been obtained.
Shelley produced a special ‘Young People’s Report’ as part of their Plan. I hope we too will do this, involving senior pupils from King James’ School, who live in the village, as well as children from Kirkheaton School and others.
The subjects mentioned earlier aren’t the limit of what a plan can do. The areas covered can be as wide as the people of the village decide; it’s very much a production of the community, by the community, for the community.
We need a good number of people to become members of working groups if we are going to make this happen. Do get in touch if you feel you can help in anyway (01484 532410).
Richard Steel
Chair
